To come up with great acrylic paintings, then it is important to know how to use acrylic paint correctly. Acrylic paint is water-based meaning that water can be used to thin it; this enables artists to generate a wide range of looks from a thin wash to a thick coat.
When painting using acrylics, it is vital to have a cup with water at hand so that you can easily dip the brush in the water to thin the acrylic paint and keep the brush clean when changing colors.
Items you will need for Acrylic painting:
- A newspaper or paper towels
- Tubes of acrylic paint
- Varied paint brushes
- A cup with water
Acrylic Painting Instructions
Step 1: Always squeeze a negligible quantity of paint from the tube. This is because acrylic paints dry up very fast. Have a spray bottle at hand for spraying water on the paint so that you can keep the paint fresh for long while painting. You can save the leftover paint by removing the dry paint and pouring the wet paint in a sealable jar. Obtain multiple paint shades and blend them together to come up with an artistically colored base for your subsequent painting project.
Step 2: Use a newspaper or paper towel sheet to wipe the brush after rinsing. Doing this prevents the acrylic paint from mixing up in case you do not intend to mix it. It also prevents the painter from allowing plenty of water to go on the canvas as this will make the paint thin and trickle down the painting creating ugly color streaks in inappropriate places.
Step 3: Make sure you apply paint to generate the preferred look. To obtain an opaque look on the paint, add little water and instead use thick paint. However, to get a thinner appearance, like the one generated with an airbrush or watercolors, it will be necessary to use water to dilute the acrylic paint. But ensure you do not use plenty of water because it will make the paint run and this is likely to destroy the effect you try to achieve. Diluted paint is normally known as a wash and acrylic washes tend to be permanent and once put on a canvas, it cannot be removed. However, you can paint over it again.
Step 4: Generate a transparent shiny finish by applying multiple layers of thin paint then apply one heavy layer to make the paint surface glossy. If preparing a collage, you can use very thick paint as glue. However, ensure the pieces you want to glue are very light and do not add water so that the paint gets sticky. This is another tip on how to use acrylic paint as glue.
Step 5: To paint a very sharp edge, put masking tape on the canvas. It is also possible to apply masking tape on already existing paint without removing it. You will be required to simply stick the masking tape onto the painting then tightly press it onto the canvas. Stick the edges of the canvas tape down tightly so that the edge that will be obtained after lifting the tape will be smooth and clear. These are just some of the tips on how to use acrylic paint.
